This sympathetic eyewitness report is a comprehensive primary source on the last independent Maya who were able to evade domination by the Spaniards until 1697. Avendaño gives an account of the two journeys he undertook in the years 1695 and 1696 in order to convert the Itza Maya. In January 1696 this led him to the capital of the Itza on an island in the middle of Lake Peten. His report abounds in rich descriptions of geography, geology, ecology, flora and fauna. The edition includes historical background, bibliography and index. As Nikolai Grube remarks in the preface: “For those wishing to conduct a critical analysis of Avendaño and his influence on later historians, access to the original Spanish text is an absolute must.”

The five early Nahuatl documents known as Anales de Tlatelolco dealing with Aztec migration toward the Valley of Mexico, the dynasties of Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco and the Tepanec capital Azcapotzalco, and the Spanish conquest, are transcribed precisely from the original manuscripts (today in the French Bibliothèque Nacional) and translated accurately into Spanish. In a Spanish introduction the author investigates the relation of the different manuscripts, their structure and scribes, and time of origin of this primary source. In appendices the reports are compared thematically, the chronology of Aztec rulers and migration sites are listed.
